A change of look to my blog

You'll notice I've changed my blog's title and background today. It's called Sayonara Japan, Ow do Yorkshire. "Ow do" is a greeting from the North which means, "How are you?" or "Hello!". As I left Japan for Yorkshire last year I thought it is a good title. I've noticed my writing these days is about discovering new places in Yorkshire and learning new things life in the UK. I'll continue to share experiences of raising bilingual children and ideas for home teaching, especially English and Japanese. Thanks for continuing to read!

Hardcastle Crags, Salem field and Hebden River

It was finally warm enough and dry under foot enough to go for a walk with my family to the riverside walk behind our new flat. There is the river and fields called Salem Fields.

Hebden river eventually leads to up to Hardcastle Crags, a part of the British National Trust. (The National Trust protects areas of Britain that have cultural, historical or natural value) Hardcastle Crags is a beautiful area of countryside walking with hills, waterfalls and a visitor centre, Gibson Mill.
We hope to visit there soon.

A Day Out with Thomas!!

On the recent August bank holiday, we went on a family trip to meet Thomas and his friends. From a little town called Ilkley on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, we took an old double-decker bus to Bolton Abbey station where we could get on the steam trains. From there it was a Thomas the Tank Engine paradise...the kids were over the moon!! There were stalls, a Thomas bouncy castle, a mini-Toby steam engine to sit astride and a Steam engine filled with Thomas toys, colouring and DVDs to watch.
From Bolton Abbey we rode a steam engine to Embasy station, just 20 minutes away. From there we could actually ride Thomas himself!! By that time my son had had so much excitement that he actually fell asleep for the main event!! We rode Thomas up and down the track for about 5 minutes then got another steamie back to Bolton Abbey station where we started. It was a busy day and definitely worth the money for the enjoyment the kids got out of it.

It's held several times during the year in the main school holidays.
Next rides are over the Easter holidays. Have a look for dates in 2012 here.
A Day out with ThomasTickets are 12 pounds for both adult and children.
A present is included in the price for children. We got a book and a flag and Thomas Mega blocks.

Cycling from Sowerby Bridge-Hebden Bridge

I am wondering whether to buy a bike and cycle part of the way to work....
I am not a sporty person at all, but I did ride in Japan, so it can't be all that different here...
It looks a beautiful ride too, all along the canal side.

Have a look at this link:

In our new town, Sowerby Bridge

We have been renting a converted mill in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, for almost one month now.

This is Carlton Mill, part of our mill complex. Our mill dates from 1792 and was one of the first woollen/textile mills in Yorkshire. The Halifax canoe club is also housed here, as we are right next to the River Calder.

The town is pretty small, with a main street running alongside the Calder and Hebble Navigation (Rochdale canal). You can see the big chimney in the background, which is our mill complex.

Here is the bottom of the main street near Sowerby Bridge station. The main road is really busy with traffic.

Many more beautiful pictures can be found at:

There is a huge group of geese and ducks who live under the bridge near our flat. My kids love them!!
