最近の好きな子供絵本 We're going on a Bear Hunt!

This is a very popular children's book in the U.K. I hadn't heard of it whilst I was in Japan.
I really love it, and so does my little girl.

It's got a repeating structure to it which makes it really easy for kids to remember and say along with. My girl picks it up and tries to read us the story, quite successfully!

The pictures are lovely too and the story ending is entertaining. I get repeated requests to read this at school and home!

English learning as a game 英語勉強はゲームで習う！

I always used to play Connect 4 when I was little.

When I started work at an English school in Tokyo, I was surprised to find Connect 4, Jenga and other games in the teaching equipment boxes.
Our school's method was to use fun games to teach children English. If they see learning as a game,　then they are more willing to participate and actually learn more because they want to join in the fun.

It's simple really, all you do to get a go, be it add a counter on Connect 4, take away a block on Jenga or whatever, is answer a question correctly. So prepare some questions, or some flash cards for younger kids, and off you go.

We also used Snakes and Ladders, Bingo, Noughts and Crosses and draughts.

コネクト４はいつも子供のころの好きなゲームだった。

東京の英会話学校を始まった時に、先生達の教材箱の中に、コネクト４とかジェンガとかいろんなボード・ゲームが入っていた。ゲームしながら英語を覚えるのは、学校の教育メソッドだった。子供には、ゲームは楽しくて、参加したいから、英語が’勉強事’じゃなく、’楽しむ事’になる。

始まるのはかんたん。ただ質問かフラッシュ・カードを準備して。自分の番になると、質問を正しく答え、そしてゲームの参加できる。サイコロを投げるかブロックをとれるかコマを移動して進む。

すごろく、ビンゴ、まるばつ遊びとかチェッカーでも使えるよ。

アルファベットを楽しく習う / Fun with the alphabet

二歳半の娘は最近アルファベットに興味を持っています。実際に、最初はひらがなに興味を表していました。ある家族のメンバーの名前の始まりをひらがなの本で探していました。アルファベットを同じようにしようと思いました。Mmmm Millie, Mmmmm mummy、Dddd daddy とOoo Ollieを教えてあげました。
そして、小さな素晴らしい絵本を持っています。Wee Sing and Learn ABC, と言います。可愛い動物さんが楽器を弾いています。たまたま "O" には、弟と同じ名前、オリバーになっています：Ollie the owl plays the oboe.
このページを見つけるのは大好きです。ひらがなの本と一緒にベッドルームに置いて、そして夜は必ずどちかを読みたいと言い出す。
同じょように、冷蔵庫に貼ってあるのABCの絵を自分から行って言います。モンッテソーリが言った通りの管理された環境は本当に効くと思いました。
娘は今日本語を上手に話します。ちょうど今お祖父ちゃんお祖母さんの家に居ます。今の環境はほとんど日本語しか聴かないから、彼女の日本語は上達しています。小さな会話したりする。来月からイギリスに引越すから、英語のレベルをあまり心配していません。この大きな環境の変わりは彼女にとって面白いの変わりと受ける事を願っています。

Learning the alphabet

Recently our daughter is interested in the alphabet. Actually she was first interested in the basic Japanese writing form, Hiragana. She could recognize some letter forms by matching them with names of family members. So I tried the same thing with the alphabet and taught her Mmm Millie, Mmm mummy, Dddd daddy along with other family members names.
We also have a super little book called, Wee Sing and Learn ABC, and it has lovely pictures of animals playing various instruments for each letter of the alphabet. Luckily enough, O is for Ollie the owl who plays the oboe!! Ollie is her brother's name so she just loves finding Ollie in the book. I keep this book, along with her hiragana book, in her bedroom, so that at night she reaches for one or the other.
She has also started to point to and name the ABC pictures on our fridge by herself. It really goes to show that Montessori's "prepared environment" really works.
At the moment our daughter speaks Japanese very well. Right now we are at grandma's and grandad's, so she hears and uses Japanese a lot. It's really coming on. We can have little conversations about things. I'm not too worried about not using English so much as from next month everything around her will all be in English. I hope the big change will be an interesting one for her.

The Tiny Boppers 外国の子供絵本とCD

最後の英語のリズミック・クラスでTiny　Boppersという本を読んでました。
この本の絵はとてもかわいくて、そして体動かしながら、１－１０の数を教えます。
CDも付いていますので、うちでも歌えます。
Tiny Boppersと一緒に体を動かして、とても楽しかった。

同じようの本, 'The Beautiful Butterfly'もちょっと前にクラスで使いました。

In my last rhythmic class we read the book, 'Tiny Boppers'. This book is really cute, and teaches 1-10 whilst moving your body to the different actions of the Tiny Boppers. There's a CD included, so you can sing at home too.
We had a lot of fun dancing with the Tiny Boppers.

A while back, we also used a similar book, 'The Beautiful Butterfly'、in our class. It has the same lovely pictures and CD included.

楽しい子供の絵本とCD Wee Sing and Learn series

今日の英語のクラスにWee Sing and Learn Coloursを読みました。このシリーズは本当に綺麗で、シンプルでわかりやすい。
Wee Sing and Learn ABCも特に好き。フォニックスを教えたいの人にお勧めです。この本を使って、娘と一緒にも読んでいます。
Halloween とChristmasにも便利な本とＣＤセットもあります。人気の歌たくさんはいています。

Learning the alphabet 楽しいアルファベット

My daughter is only two and a half so I certainly don't want to force her to memorize letters at the moment.

Maria Montessori noted that children learn from a well prepared environment, so here's what I'm doing at home. My daughter loves to open the fridge. So on the fridge I've stuck an A4 sheet with the alphabet on and a corresponding picture for each letter. I also have a set of alphabet flash cards, and I select a couple of those to stick on the fridge and change them occasionally.

So everytime she goes to the fridge she sees the alphabet. We have a chat about what's up there, but I just keep it light.
We also have magnetic letters up there too. She makes great faces with them, and then a great mess with them on the floor.

'Touch!'というゲーム

日本の人気かるたと言うゲームは英語のクラスでよく使われる。
子供はこのゲームをよく知っているから、先生にはフラシュ・カードだけが必要。
一つのカードを選んで、"Touch the dog!!"を言うと、子供が出来るだけ早く"dog"と言うカードを叩く。聞く練習としてはいいけど、このゲームの中に子供からの言葉があまり出ない。それか、子供達はよく"touch, touch!"を繰り返すだけ。生徒がカードを叩く時、"It's a dog!" と言ったら、英語の練習になる。それを慣れると、次のステップに。質問と答えの練習になれる。生徒から質問を貰って、(例えば、"What is it?")先生が"It's a dog!"と答える。生徒がカードを叩きながら、"It's a dog!"と言うと、 質問と答えの練習は簡単に出来る。かるたは会話的になれる!!
